1883 Philadelphia Athletics BBC Team CDV - Newly Discovered!

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $2,160

This rare composite CDV features oval portrait images of fifteen members of the 1883 American Association Champion Philadelphia Athletics. Each player is pictured in formal attire and is identified in print below his respective image. Included here are star pitcher Bobby Mathews, Harry Stovey, Cub Stricker, George Bradley (who is best known today for throwing the first no-hitter in National League history), player/manager Lon Knight, Mike Moynahan, Fred Corey, and the club's three owners: Bill Sharsig, Lew Simmons, and Charlie Mason (all three are featured in the center). No photographer's credit is present. The Athletics were charter members of the American Association, which was formed in 1882 as a major league rival to the National League, but 1883 represents the only year in which the club captured the pennant during the league’s ten-year existence (1882-1891). This is first 1883 Athletics CDV we have ever seen and it has never before been offered publicly. According to our consignor, this card originates from his grandfather, Clarence H. Ashmead, who originally lived in Philadelphia and moved to Florida in the late 1880s. Further attribution to his grandfather is evidenced by the vintage pencil notation on the reverse that reads "Clarence H. Ashmead's card + my pencil." This is a magnificent rarity! The card (2.5 x 4.25 inches) is moderately toned, with wear along the borders and a small stain in the lower right corner of the mount. In Good to Very Good condition overall. Encapsulated and certified as "Authentic" by SGC.   Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $2,160
