1887-1890 Allen & Ginter Large-Size Nonsport Tobacco-Card Collection (103 cards)

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,200

Presented is a collection of 103 tobacco cards from four different Allen & Ginter issues dating to between 1887 and 1890. This substantial group of large-format Allen & Ginter tobacco cards is part of an extremely large nineteenth and early twentieth-century nonsport-card collection consigned to this auction, with more than two dozen sets offered individually and the balance offered in a series of group lots and collections. While the cards in this collection span several grades, it is an extremely pleasing group overall in relatively consistent condition. In the condition composite below, it is noted that some cards grade technically lesser than the overall condition for the given set. In almost all cases, the cards present in the same condition when viewed from the front but are downgraded due to small flaws on the reverse, such as pencil notations, album residue, or paper loss, all extremely common flaws when dealing with nineteenth-century cards. This collection consists of the following: 1) 1889 N39 Fish from American Waters (8 cards): Vg, with two lesser. 2) 1889 N41 Quadrupeds (1 card): Armadillo (Gd/Vg). 3) 1889 N42 Song Birds of the World (1 card): Troupial (Fr/Gd). 4) 1889 N44 The World’s Decorations (93 cards): Includes near-complete set of forty-seven different, which grades Vg to Vg-Ex overall, with two lesser. The duplicates grade Vg overall, with ten lesser. This is a very attractive collection of large-format tobacco cards from four of the nineteenth century's most popular and classic sets. Total: 103 cards.  Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,200
