1938 The Hobbit - First American Edition - First Impression

First American edition of the The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien. Published in 1938 by Houghton, Mifflin and Co., New York. This is the rare first impression of the book and features a vignette of a bowing Hobbit on the title page. Our consignor purchased this book many years ago from Peter Harrington in London, one of the world's leading antiquarian booksellers. Harrington described the book as follows: "Octavo. Finely bound by the Chelsea Bindery in morocco, titles to spine and front cover gilt, raised bands, gilt blocked dragon to front cover, gilt rule to turn ins, marbled endpapers with original map endpapers bound in, gilt edges. With illustrations including the endpapers of maps and scenes from the book, of which 4 are in colour. All designed by the author." The handwritten notations "JGP 17046" and "1st US Edition £3500" appear in pencil along the top border of the front flyleaf. The covers display light wear, otherwise in Fine condition overall.
