1910-Era Tobacco-Card Collection (179) Including T205, T206, and T210 "Series 8"

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $5,700

Presented is a modest-grade collection of 179 tobacco cards from the 1910 era highlighted by thirteen Hall of Famers, including Christy Mathewson, Nap Lajoie, and John McGraw, as well as Black Sox star Joe Jackson. The collection also features sixteen of the rare "Series 8" cards from the T210 Old Mill series as well as seventeen scarcer Southern Leaguers from the T206 White Border set. These cards were just recently discovered by our consignor at an estate sale in New England, and it is very likely the tobacco cards in this find have all remained together for the last century. We have submitted three cards to SGC grading. This collection consists of the following: 1) 1909-1911 E254 Colgan's Chips (2 cards): Adams (Vg) and Hahn (Pr). 2) 1909-1911 T206 White Border (149 cards): Overall condition is 20% Gd to Vg and 80% lesser (many of these present as Gd to Vg on front, but have been downgraded due to flaws on the reverse). All cards have Piedmont or Sweet Caporal backs, except for four Sovereign, three Old Mill, two El Principe de Gales, two brown Hindu, one American Beauty, and one Polar Bear. Keys: Bresnahan/portrait (Fr), Chase/blue (Gd+, Old Mill), Chase/dark cap (Vg), Flick (Vg), Jennings/both hands (Pr), Joss/portrait (Pr/Fr), Lajoie/portrait (Fr), Lundgren/KC (Fr), Mathewson/dark cap (VG 40), Mathewson/portrait (GOOD+ 35), Mathewson/white cap (Pr), McGraw/glove at hip (Gd+), Wheat (Vg), Willis/portrait (GOOD 30), and seventeen different Southern Leaguers (five Gd to Vg and twelve lesser; twelve Old Mill). 3) 1910 T210 Old Mill Cigarettes "Series 8" (16 cards): All different cards from the rare "Series 8" featuring members of the Soutern Association. Condition is four Gd to Vg and twelve lesser. 4) 1911 T205 Gold Borders (6 cards): Barger/full "B" (Gd), Byrne (Vg-Ex), Devlin (Gd, Polar Bear), Street (Vg, Honest Long Cut), Titus (Vg), and White (Vg). 5) 1912 T207 Brown Background (1 card): Konetchy (Vg). 6) 1919-1921 W514 (2 cards): #15 Joe Jackson (Black Sox, Pr) and 38 (Pr). 7) 1922 E120 American Caramel (1 card): Nunamaker (Vg). 8) 1933 R319 Goudey (1 card): #60 Hoyt (HOF, Vg). 9) 1934-1936 R327 Diamond Stars (1 card): #28 Lopez (HOF, Pr). Tobacco cards in low and mid grade represent perhaps the best value among all vintage baseball cards. They don't cost a fortune but capture the spirit of the history of the game and collecting as well (some would argue better!) than more expensive higher-grade examples. This is an outstanding collection of cards featuring many highlights from some of the era's most popular and classic sets. The equivalent SMR value for just the three graded cards (factoring the one half-grade in at the lower whole-grade level) is $875. Total: 179 cards.  Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+. SOLD FOR $5,700
