Fidel Castro Single-Signed Ball with Extraordinary Provenance!
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,800
Rawlings R100 "Official League" ball signed by Fidel Castro (1926- ), former President of Cuba. Castro has flawlessly signed the ball in black marker, grading "10," on a side panel. This ball has a unique and ideal, well-documented provenance. Our consignor was part of an official U. S. government trade trip in the early 2000s. In anticipation of meeting Castro, he packed three baseballs in the hope that the Cuban leader would sign them. He did eventually meet Castro and as he writes in his accompanying letter of provenance, "El Commandante was very obliging. He signed them with deliberation, slowly and carefully." Castro signed baseballs are extremely rare, and virtually none have the remarkable provenance of this example. In fact, this is the first example we have ever handled and we cannot recall having seen more than a few others at auction during the past thirty ears. It should be noted that of the three balls signed by Castro for our consignor in 2000, none has ever been sold publicly or privately until now. Unlike nearly all other foreign leaders, Castro is very familiar with the sport of baseball. It is documented that he played the game in college and photos exist of him taking part in a charity baseball game in Cuba in 1959. He also attended a number of baseball games while in office. The ball, which has a "South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association" stamping on the sweet spot, displays a few tiny areas of very light toning and is otherwise in Near Mint condition. Full LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $4,800
