Key Rarity 1964 "Support Johnson and Civil Rights" Portrait Pinback
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $480
Rare and classic Lyndon Johnson "Civil Rights" pinback rarity dating from the 1964 presidential campaign. The red-white-and-blue pin (1.625 inches in diameter) features a portrait image of Johnson in the center, with the American flag on his left and a donkey (symbol of the Democratic party) on his right. The lettering on the pin reads "Support Johnson and Civil Rights." This is universally regarded as the most significant and desirable of all Lyndon Johnson campaign pins. It is also rare, as well as naturally being a condition rarity (as this is an easily damaged litho pin, with the design printed directly on metal, as opposed to a celluloid pinback). The passing of the Civil Rights Act in 1964 was one of Johnson's signature achievements in office and, as this pin shows, civil rights was still an important issue in the 1964 campaign, especially since his Republican opponent, Senator Barry Goldwater, voted against the historic Civil Rights bill. The pin displays a few light surface scratches and is in Excellent condition overall. This is an outstanding example of this classic and rarely seen political pin dating from Johnson's 1964 campaign.
