Jesse Owens Single-Signed Ball
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,440
Worth Mid-Atlantic League (Daily) ball signed by Jesse Owens (1913-1980), legendary track star and Olympic gold-medal winner. Owens has signed the ball in blue ink on a side panel, with the signature grading "7/8." Owens, who was the fastest man alive during the 1930s, is best remembered for his remarkable performance in the 1936 Olympics, held in Berlin, Germany. Owens won four gold medals at the games (100 meters, 200 meters, long jump, and 4x100 meter relay), the most by any athlete, and in doing so helped discredit Hitler's doctrine of Aryan supremacy. The Mid-Atlantic League was in existence from 1925 to 1951, with Elmer Daily serving as president for that entire time. As such, this ball was most likely signed by Owens sometime during the 1940s. This is the first single-signed Jesse Owens balls we have handled and we have seen few other vintage examples. The ball, which has white seams, displays moderate wear and is in Very Good condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,500+. SOLD FOR $1,440
