1914 Marsuma "Famous Golfers and Their Strokes" Complete Set (50): #4 PSA Set Registry!

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $7,800

Presented is one of the finest complete sets of 1914 Marsuma "Famous Golfers and Their Strokes" cards ever assembled. All fifty cards are graded and encapsulated by PSA. The complete set ranks fourth on the PSA Set Registry with an overall GPA of 6.26, which is extraordinary for this condition-sensitive set. Because of the gold border design (similar to the T205 Gold Border baseball cards) the set is considered by many serious golf-card collectors to be the most difficult set to complete in high grade. This is a gorgeous set, rarely offered in complete-set form in such high grade. The 1914 Marsuma "Famous Golfers and Their Strokes" set is often overlooked by collectors simply because it does not include Bobby Jones or Walter Hagen. However, it does feature multiple cards of many legendary pioneers of the game, such as Harry Vardon, James Braid, J. H. Taylor, H. H. Hilton, and two rookie cards of Hall of Famer Walter Travis. Only eleven different golfers comprise the fifty-card set. The set consists of one MINT 9, nine NM-MT 8, one NM+ 7.5, eight NM 7, three EX-MT+ 6.5, ten EX-MT 6, one EX+ 5.5, fourteen EX 5, two VG-EX+ 4.5, and one VG-EX 4. The PSA grades are as follows: One MINT 9: #7 Braid (1 of 1, one of only six cards of any subject within the set to ever grade Mint out of 1,421 cards submitted to date). Nine NM-MT 8: #6 Braid, 21, 22, 23 Hilton, 27 Taylor, 34 Vardon, 35 Vardon, 40 Taylor, and 41 Taylor. All but #34 are highest-graded examples. One NM+ 7.5: #43 Taylor. Eight NM 7: #1 Vardon, 3 Vardon, 5 Braid, 9 Braid, 25 Taylor, 26 Taylor, 28 Taylor, and 32 Braid. Three EX-MT+ 6.5: #12 Braid, 17 Taylor, and 46 Braid. Ten EX-MT 6: #8 Braid, 10 Braid, 24 Hilton, 31 Braid, 37, 38 Travis RC, 39 Hilton, 42 Taylor, 44 Taylor, and 45 Taylor. One EX+ 5.5: #50 Hilton. Fourteen EX 5: #2 Vardon, 11 Braid, 13, 14, 15, 16, 18 Taylor, 20 Ball, 29 Taylor, 30 Taylor, 33 Braid, 36 Vardon, 48, and 49 Travis RC. Two VG-EX+ 4.5: #4 Braid and 47 Braid. One VG-EX 4: #19 Ball. This is a remarkable set. Very few complete sets have been assembled in any condition, but the assembly of a set of this caliber is particularly extraordinary. Total: 50 cards.  Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $7,800
