1948 Joe Louis vs. Joe Walcott Full Ticket (Final Title Defense) Plus Signed Index Card, Two Pinbacks, and Wire Photo (5 items)

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $540

This collection of material related to the career of former heavyweight boxing champion Joe Louis is highlighted by a scarce full ticket to the 1948 heavyweight title fight between Louis and "Jersey Joe" Walcott at Yankee Stadium on June 23rd. The ticket (7.25 x 2.75 inches), for a "Lower Box Seat," features small portrait photos of each fighter in the center. This was Joe Louis' final title defense before retiring the following year. The two had fought the year before, with Louis winning a controversial split decision. The second bout was equally tough for Louis. Walcott dropped Louis in the third, but Louis rallied late and knocked Walcott out in the eleventh round. Louis attempted a comeback a few years after his retirement, but never again regained the heavyweight title. Vg-Ex, with a tiny chip in the upper right corner and general edge wear.

The remaining items in this collection are as follows: 1) Joe Louis Signed 3x5 Card. Signed in black marker (grading "9"). Vg, with moderate toning and tape residue on the reverse. 2) Joe Louis Pinback with Ribbon. The white pin (1.75 inches in diameter) features Louis in a boxing pose and has red, white, and blue ribbons attached. Nr-Mt. 3) Joe Louis Pinback. The white pin (1.75 inches in diameter) pictures Louis in a boxing pose and is lettered "Joe Louis World's Champion." Gd, with a heavy horizontal scratch and soiling. 4) Original Joe Louis News Photo. Acme Newspictures photo of Louis in the ring after knocking out Harry Thomas in the fifth round of their heavyweight championship fight. Date stamped "Apr 3 1938" on the reverse. Vg, with minor creasing. Total: 5 items (ticket, signed 3x5 card, two pinbacks, and photo). LOA from James Spence/JSA.
