1951 Topps "Ringside" Boxing Complete Set (96)
Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $1,080
Complete set of Topps "Ringside." This was Topps' first attempt at boxing cards with the 96-card "Ringside" boxing series issued in 1951. The exceptional artwork and the inclusion of boxing greats from all eras, such as Rocky Marciano, John Sullivan, Gene Tunney, Joe Louis, and Ray Robinson, among others, has always made this set one of boxing-card collecting's premier issues. Topps apparently found much greater success with baseball and football. This is confirmed both by the relative scarcity of "Ringside" cards, and the fact that this was the only Topps boxing set ever issued. The quality of production of this issue, however, is equal or superior to that of all early 1950s bubble-gum cards issued by Topps or Bowman. Condition of the set is 35% Ex (including a few Ex-Mt), 31% Vg-Ex, 25% Vg, and 9% lesser. Fourteen cards are graded and encapsulated by PSA. Keys: #1 Lesnevitch (Vg), 3 LaMotta (VG 3), 11 Baer (EX-MT 6), 31 Walcott (VG-EX 4), 32 Marciano (VG-EX 4), 43 Robinson (Vg-Ex), 49 Murphy SP (Vg), 69 Sullivan (Vg-Ex), 88 Louis (Vg-Ex), 95 Tunney (GOOD 2), and 96 Charles (Fr). Other Graded Cards: #4 (EX 5), 18 (NM 7 [OC]), 42 Flowers (VG-EX 4), 44 Zale/Cerdan (EX-MT 6 [OC]), 47 Montgomery (EX-MT 6), 58 Layne (EX-MT 6), 63 Canzoneri (EX+ 5.5), 64 Miller (EX 5), and 66 Firpo (EX 5). All cards are bright and crisp, with bold colors; hard-to-see creases or honest corner wear account for most of the lower grades. This is an extremely attractive complete set of this classic 1950s Topps issue that can be had at a fraction of the cost of a higher-graded set. Total: 96 cards. Reserve $400. Estimate $1,000+.
