1931 Cigarrera Bigott Boxing SGC-Graded Partial Set (40/60)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,200

Presented is a partial set of 1931 Cigarrera Bigott boxing cards consisting of forty different out of sixty in a complete set. Each card is graded and encapsulated by SGC. Issued in Venezuela, this was one of two sets issued with Cigarrera Bigott tobacco products that year. The first set, according to the card backs, depicts only fighters who boxed in Venezuela and other Latin American countries. Only a handful of fighters featured would be familiar names to even the most seasoned collector. The second set, which is offered here, was packed with the "Diana Cigarettes" brand and features the same sixty world-class boxers as the 1927 E211 York Caramel set. (A remarkable eighteen International Boxing Hall of Fame members are featured in this partial set.) The card fronts are the same as the E211 set, but the reverses are printed entirely in Spanish. Boxing collectors will attest that E211 York Caramels are extremely difficult to find (to date, only 186 cards from the series have ever been graded by PSA and SGC combined). Cigarrera Bigott cards are even rarer, with no complete sets known to exist and only fifty-three cards ever graded by SGC (to date, PSA has not graded a single example). Advanced research into the set and census taking reveals that known examples of each card vary from one to four. SGC Grading Composite: Four EX 60: #13, 16 Burlenbach (HOF), 46, and 56. One VG/EX+ 55: #60. Five VG/EX 50: #7 Dundee (HOF), 36 Carpentier (HOF), 47 Dillon (HOF), 51, and 58 Walker (HOF). Six VG+ 45: #4, 8 Gans (HOF), 15 Mandell (HOF), 17, 44, and 49. Ten VG 40: #9 Slattery (HOF), 12, 20 Taylor (HOF), 21, 22, 31, 42, 50 Canzoneri (HOF), 52, and 59 Petrolle (HOF). Two GOOD+ 35: #10 and 55. Seven GOOD 30: #5 Corbett (HOF), 11, 18 Genaro (HOF), 19, 24 Rosenbloom (HOF), 39, and 40 Shade (HOF). Two FAIR 20: #45 Gibbons (HOF) and 53. Three POOR 10: #32 La Barba (HOF), 33 Gibbons (HOF), and 35. This is a very attractive collection that presents far better than suggested by the technically accurate grades. These cards are printed on fragile stock, which is susceptible to creasing, wrinkling, and corner wear. The offered partial set represents almost all of the graded population and ranks as one of the most complete collections ever assembled. This is an incredible opportunity to acquire an extraordinary collection of cards from this exceedingly rare set that would be a significant addition to even the most advanced world-class boxing-card collection. Total: 40 cards.  Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,200
