Circa 1880 Lord Frederick A. Stanley CDV - Original Presenter of the Stanley Cup
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,440
While few hockey fans will recognize the gentleman pictured on this rare nineteenth-century CDV, his name today is virtually synonymous with the game: Col. The Rt. Hon. F. A. Stanley, M. P. It was Stanley, in 1893, who began the tradition of awarding a trophy cup to Canada's top-ranked amateur hockey team. Later, in 1915 it was awarded to the winner of the championship series between two professional leagues, the National Hockey League and the Pacific Coast Hockey Association. Finally, in 1926, "The Stanley Cup" became the official championship trophy of the NHL, with the tradition continuing to this day. The offered CDV, produced by The London Stereoscopic & Photographic Company, pictures Stanley sometime between the years 1874 and 1886. As noted on the reverse, The London Stereoscopic & Photographic Company received a medal for portraiture at the Vienna Exhibition in 1873. That notation, combined with the fact that beginning sometime in 1886 Stanley was awarded the title "Lord" (he would then be referred to as "Lord Stanley" and not the title on this card) conclusively dates the CDV to the 1874-1886 time period. Frederick Arthur Stanley, 16th Earl of Derby, known as Lord Stanley of Preston after 1886, was an English politician who later served as the sixth Governor General of Canada, from 1888 to 1893. He was also an avid sportsman and it was his love of the game of hockey which motivated him to present the Stanley Cup in 1893. In 1946 Stanley was elected to the Canadian Hockey Hall of Fame. This is one of the few CDVs we have ever seen of Stanley, let alone offered. It is also in outstanding high grade. The photo displays remarkable clarity and is in Mint condition. The mount (2.5 x 4.25 inches) displays only the slightest hint of edge wear along the base and is otherwise in Near Mint condition. Encapsulated and certified as "Authentic" by SGC. This is a very rare and significant CDV relating to the history of hockey and the birth of the Stanley Cup. Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,440
