1949 Charlie Keller Signed Pro-Model Bat - MEARS
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,200
Charlie Keller H&B signature-model ("R43") bat dating from the 1943-1949 manufacturing period. Graded A8.5 by MEARS. Although this bat dates to the general 1943-1949 manufacturing period, it can be more definitely dated to the 1949 season based upon the H&B shipping records. This bat measures 36 inches in length and weighs 35.3 ounces. As noted in the MEARS LOA, Keller only placed orders for 36-inch model R43 bats during the 1949 season. Two bats were shipped on 2/25/49, six bats on 3/10/49, and six more on 3/31/49. The bat, which is not cracked, displays heavy use along its entire length, including deeply embedded ball marks, green rack marks, cleat marks, and a small wrap of vintage tape around the knob. Keller has signed the bat "To Paul/Charlie Keller" in blue ink (grading "8") on the sweet spot of the barrel. Charlie "King Kong" Keller was one of mainstays of the Yankees lineup during the 1940s. Keller, who hit over thirty home runs and drove in over 100 runs on three separate occasions, helped lead the Yankees to six pennants and five World Championships during his ten seasons with the club. Keller batted .250 with 3 home runs and 16 RBI in 1949, which marked his final campaign with the "Bronx Bombers." He retired in 1952 with 189 home runs, 760 RBI, and a .286 lifetime average. Graded A8.5 by MEARS (5 point base grade, plus 3 points for use, and a half point for its pinpoint dating). LOA from Troy Kinunen and Dave Bushing/MEARS and LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,200
