1940s to 1960s Jackie Robinson Pin Collection (9)
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,560
When Jackie Robinson broke into the Majors in 1947, numerous pins were produced for sale at stadium concession stands to memorialize the event and to allow fans to express their support. The late 1940s and early 1950s were the heyday of the "stadium pin" sets, so in the years that followed his Major League debut, additional Jackie Robinson pins were also issued. Aside from Babe Ruth, perhaps no player has ever been the subject of more pins (and more interest from pin collectors) than Jackie Robinson. This is an outstanding collection of nine different Jackie Robinson pins, including many rarities, spanning the years 1947-1964. 1) Classic "1947 Brooklyn Dodgers Congratulations 'Jackie'" pinback. This unusual pinback was specifically designed to be worn as a show of support for Jackie Robinson by dedicated fans. Issued by "Baker Mgt. Service" of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as noted on the edge. Diameter: 1 inch. With light scratches (only visible when viewed at certain angles) and slight remnants of its original ribbon. Ex. 2) Classic circa 1947 "I'm Rooting For Jackie Robinson" pin. Diamater: 1.75 inches. Nr-Mt. 3-4) "1947 Rookie of the Year" with red border and "I'm Rooting For Jackie Robinson" with orange border plus ribbon and charm. Both are similar in design, though the orange-border pin is far rarer. The red-border variety, produced by the "Emress Nov. Co." of New York, is Ex-Mt, the orange-border pin is Nr-Mt, with a small stain to the ribbon. 5) Classic circa 1950 PM10 portrait pin with yellow ribbon and charm. This pin was part of a larger series featuring the Dodgers. Diameter: 1.75 inches. Nr/Mt. 6) Rare circa 1950 PM10 portrait pin. This pin features the same image of Robinson that appears on a blue-background PM10, but the black-and-white examples are considerably rarer. Vg, with moderate scratches along the perimeter at approximately eight o'clock. 7) Circa 1948 PM10 dugout pose. Ex-Mt. 8) Circa 1955 full-color pinback of Robinson in portrait. The lettering along the perimeter reads "Jackie Robinson 3B Brooklyn Dodgers." Diameter: 1.25 inches. Vg-Ex. 9) 1964 pin, designed in the shape of a baseball diamond, that reads "Jackie Robinson Team For Rockefeller." Issued during the 1964 Republican Presidential primary to show Robinson's support for Nelson Rockefeller. Produced by the "J. Friedes Co." of New York. 2 x 2 inches. Vg-Ex. Total: 9 pins. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,560
