Original Artwork for 1970 Topps Story Booklet #9 - Bobby Murcer
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $480
In 1970, Topps produced a series of twenty-four tiny "Story Booklets" that were inserted in each of its regular card packs (one booklet per pack). Each booklet provided a brief six-page illustrated biography of a different major league star, including Willie Mays, Ernie Banks, and Pete Rose. Offered here is the original artwork to book number nine in the series: The Bobby Murcer Story. The artwork for the booklet, rendered in ink, is presented on three separate sheets (9.5 x 7 inches), with each sheet consisting of two pages from the booklet. The artwork includes the text and page numbers. No artist credit is listed. One of the panels on page six reflects a text change, with the original text neatly sliced out and replaced by three applied words. Signed by Murcer in black marker (grading "10") along the top. Originally purchased by our consignor, a collector of unusually long standing, at the famous Topps auction held by Guernsey's in 1989. Matted and framed together with the individual six pages of the issued booklet. In Excellent to Mint condition. Total dimensions: 18 x 28.5 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $480
