Ron Lewis Original Cal Ripken Jr. Artwork Used for the Cover Illustration of the Summer 1994 Issue of Baseball-Hobby Card Report
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $2,400
Original Ron Lewis oil-on-board artwork of Cal Ripken Jr. used as the cover illustration for the Summer 1984 issue of the Baseball-Hobby Card Report. The painting features a large portrait image of Ripken flanked by two smaller images of Ripken in a batting and fielding pose, respectively. Signed by Lewis in the lower right corner. This is an extremely impressive Ripken artwork and one that, in addition to being very well known, has never before been offered at auction. It has been consigned directly by a former executive with Renata Galasso, the publisher of the Baseball-Hobby Card Report, and in whose sole possession it has remained these past thirty years. Ron Lewis is one of the premier sports artists of our time, best known to collectors today for his famous 500 Home Run Club and 3,000 Hit Club artworks. In addition to his baseball pieces, Lewis has also created a number of memorable works relating to the sports of football, basketball, and boxing. Original Ron Lewis paintings are highly prized by collectors in both the fields of sports and art, but this is the first time we have ever seen, let alone handled, any of his original cover artworks. Ideally, the artwork is accompanied by an original copy of the magazine on which it is featured. The painting (18 x 23.5 inches) is bordered along all four edges by a .75-inch application of black tape, otherwise it remains in Near Mint to Mint condition. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
