1962 New York Mets Opening Day Ticket Stub and Program
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $720
Addendum: The original catalog description for this lot is in error. The Mets played in the Polo Grounds in both 1962 and 1963. Therefore, the ticket stub offered here might possibly date from the first game in 1963. Because the stub is not dated, it is impossible to state with certainty which home opener it was issued for. However, the fact that it came together with the 1962 program makes it more likely that it is from the first game in 1962, but, of course, it cannot be guaranteed.Ticket stub from the first home game in New York Mets history, held at the Polo Grounds one April 13, 1962, together with a program from that historic first home stand. The ticket stub, designated "Game No. 1," at the Polo Grounds, was issued for a "Bleacher Admission" and features the Mets logo at the base. Although it is not dated, this stub conclusively dates to the club's first game in 1962 because the team moved to Shea Stadium the following year. The Mets' home opener on April 13, 1962, was the second game of the season for the club, which lost its season opener 11-4 against the Cardinals in St. Louis on April 11th. Unfortunately, the Mets also dropped their home opener, losing to the Pirates 4-3. Because it rained heavily on April 13th, only 12,447 braved the elements to come out and watch the Mets that day, making this both a rare and historic souvenir representing the birth of the Mets franchise. The stub (1.5 x 3 inches) displays a few very light creases and is in Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Accompanying the ticket stub is a 1962 Mets program issued for one of the club's first four home games against the Pittsburgh Pirates (April 13-15; doubleheader scheduled on the 15th). Because the program is not scored, it is impossible to say which of the first four games it was issued for, but it can only be from the first home series against the Pirates, because advertising on the interior pages heralds the next two home games against the Houston Colt .45s on April 16th and 17th. The twenty-page program (5.75 x 9.25 inches) remains in Excellent to Mint condition. Total: 2 items (ticket stub and program). Reserve $200. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $720
