Enormous 1942-1992 "Baseball" Comic-Book Collection (144)
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $960
All of the comic books in this diverse collection of 144 books, spanning the years 1942 to 1992, have one thing in common: they all relate to baseball in some manner, either on the front or back cover. For the vast majority that association is depicted in the cover illustration (the characters are playing baseball, the setting is a baseball stadium, a piece of baseball equipment is on the ground, etc). However, twenty-five comics feature a baseball-related advertisement on the back cover, including eleven player-endorsed Wheaties comic strips and an additional Wheaties advertisement featuring Phil Rizzuto. Many familiar comic characters are represented here, including Bugs Bunny, Casper, Donald Duck, Woody Woodpecker, Archie, Dennis the Menace, Superman, Nancy & Sluggo, and Richie Rich. A number of comics are also devoted exclusively to a specific player, such as Mickey Mantle, Jackie Robinson, Lou Gehrig, Larry Doby, Eddie Stanky, Nolan Ryan, Ozzie Smith, and Bo Jackson, with four having been signed by the respective player: Nolan Ryan (two different examples), Larry Doby, and George Foster. The number of comics, by decade, is as follows: 1940s (11); 1950s (63); 1960s (17); 1970s (28), 1980s (11), and 1990s (6). The overwhelming majority are well-read copies and the books are in Good to Very Good condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA accompanies for the four autographed books. Total: 144 comic books. Reserve $200. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $960
