1947 Jackie Robinson News Photo Used for His 1948-1949 Leaf Rookie Card - PSA/DNA Type 1 - One of Two Known Examples!
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $7,800
Original Associated Press news photo (5 x 7 inches) of Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson as a member of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Certified as an Original Type 1 photograph by PSA/DNA. This image of Robinson is instantly recognizable to card collectors, as it was used for the production of Robinson's rookie card in the 1948-1949 Leaf set. Robinson's 1948-1949 Leaf bubble-gum card is one of the most popular, striking, and classic of all Jackie Robinson cards and, in the eyes of many, Jackie Robinson's single most desirable baseball card. While many examples of the card itself exist, the original photo used for its production is exceedingly rare. This is one of only two known examples and the first we have ever seen at auction.
The offered photo is of all the greater significance as this very photo is the plate specimen featured in PSA/DNA's highly regarded guide to original photos, Black and White Photography - A Timeless Remembrance by Marshall Fogel and Henry Yee. (A copy of the guide accompanies the photo). The original paper news caption, dated "5-9-47," remains affixed to the reverse, as does a tiny newspaper clipping featuring this image. An additional date stamp of "May 12 1947" appears on the paper caption, as do a number of editorial marks and notations. The photo displays a number of tiny creases and surface wrinkles throughout, as well as small tear along the top border. In Very Good condition overall. LOA from PSA/DNA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $7,800
