Rare Circa 1928-1930 Babe Ruth "Home Run Special" White-Leather Glove
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,800
Rare high-grade Spalding white-leather Babe Ruth "Home Run Special" fielder's glove dating from circa 1928-1930. This is one of the most desirable of all Babe Ruth store-model gloves, notable both for its extreme scarcity and aesthetic appeal. It is also the first example we have ever offered, and we cannot recall the last time we have seen another at auction. The glove, which is crafted for a right-hand thrower, features a single one-inch web between the thumb and index finger. Pocket stampings consist of the company name "Spalding," Babe Ruth's facsimile signature, and the model name: "Home Run Special." A Spalding label appears on the wrist strap. Ruth had an exclusive glove endorsement with Draper & Maynard from 1921 to 1927, but immediately thereafter both Spalding and Reach began production of Ruth-model gloves. The offered glove displays light wear but is in remarkable condition given its age and former use. The leather remains soft and supple, with no tears or cracks, and the rolled leather piping remains completely intact. In Excellent condition overall. This is a superb Spalding Ruth "Home Run Special" glove and one that would be a highlight in even the most advanced Babe Ruth or store-model glove collection.
