Circa 1920 Independent Brewing Co. of Pittsburgh Baseball Advertising Display
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $720
Extraordinarily rare and striking baseball-theme "trolley" or "subway" advertising signs issued to promote "Silver Top Beer." The display features a generic illustration of a ballplayer along with the baseball catch phrases "Don't Fan - Watch the Ball" and "Keep Cool With Silver Top Beer." The name of the brewery, "Independent Brewing Co. of Pittsburgh," appears along the base. This is one of three different, similarly designed baseball-theme signs issued by the Independent Brewing Co. of Pittsburgh that we have seen, but the first example of this particular sign we have ever offered.
The Independent Brewing Co. of Pittsburgh was in operation from 1905 through 1933; however, the design of the displays (along with the uniform style depicted) strongly suggest that they date from earlier rather than later in the company's history. Interestingly, the baseball player depicted here does bear a slight resemblance to Honus Wagner, which was probably intentional. The sign (19.5 x 9.75 inches), which appears to be on cardboard stock, displays a few light creases and is otherwise in apparent Excellent condition. Matted and frame to total dimensions of 23 x 13.5 inches. Reserve $200. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $720
