Two Jackie Robinson Signed Checks (1948 and 1965) in Framed Display
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,896
Two Jackie Robinson signed personal checks, each accompanied by a signed letter of provenance from Rachel Robinson (Jackie Robinson's wife), presented together in a framed display. The first, drawn on the Chemical Bank & Trust Company of New York, is dated May 26, 1948, and is made out to "Bordens Farm Product" in the amount of $7.77. It is signed "Jackie Robinson" in blue ink (grading "10") along the base. This is an extremely early Robinson check, dating to his second season with Brooklyn. The Dodgers hosted the Cubs on May 26, 1948, the day this check was signed, with Robinson going 1-3 in a 4-1 loss. The check (8 x 3 inches) displays normal bank cancellation stamps as well as a few minor edge tears, none of which affect the signature. In Very Good to Excellent condition. The second check, drawn on the Chemical Bank New York Trust Company, is dated September 25, 1965, and is made out to "Hilton Inn" in the amount of $17.20. Signed "Jack R. Robinson" in black ink ("8") at the base. The check (6 x 2.75 inches) displays normal bank cancellation stamps (not affecting the signature) and is in Near Mint condition. As noted earlier, each of these checks originates directly from the Robinson family and is accompanied by a signed letter from Rachel Robinson attesting to their provenance. The checks have been matted and framed together with two photos of Robinson to total dimensions of 27 x 13 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,896
