1948 Honus Wagner Signed Pittsburgh Pirates Contract
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $5,036
Four-page fold-over contract, dated January 21, 1948, between Honus Wagner and the Pittsburgh Athletic Company, Inc., signed in black ink by "John H. Wagner" (grading "10"), "H. Roy Haney" ("8/9") as general manager of Pittsburgh, and National League president Ford Frick ("9"). The one-year agreement calls for Wagner to serve as a coach for the Pirates during the 1950 season at a salary of $5,000. Contracts of Hall of Fame players are rare and the offered example is no exception. This is only the second Wagner contract we have ever offered and we can only recall seeing three others at public auction over the years, all of which were also coaching contracts. The first example we offered (a 1950 Pirates contract) appeared as Lot 754 in REA's May 2012 auction, and realized a final sales price of $4,444. Wagner probably spent more time in a Pirates uniform than any other player in history: eighteen years as a player (1900-1917) and another nineteen as a coach (1933-1951). Considered one of the greatest players in baseball history, Wagner was one of the first five inductees into the Baseball Hall of Fame and in 1999 was one of thirty players selected to Major League Baseball's All-Century Team. The contract (8.5 x 11 inches) displays two horizontal folds and a few very light creases. In Excellent condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $2,000++. SOLD FOR $5,036
