1940 Babe Ruth Signed Postcard - Original Owner Provenance!

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,963

Presented here is not only an exceptional Babe Ruth signed postcard, but one that comes with the remarkable provenance of having been consigned by the gentleman who personally obtained it directly from Ruth in 1940! The postcard, which is a souvenir from the Henryville House (an old Pennsylvania resort located in the Poconos), is inscribed on the reverse "To Bobby Snedeker/Sincerely Babe Ruth." Both the inscription and signature have been flawlessly scripted in black fountain pen and grade "10." Bobby Snedeker is none other than our consignor, now known as "Mr. Robert Snedeker," who we had the great pleasure to meet and who has been gracious enough to provide us with an accompanying one-page typed-signed letter of provenance detailing its history. In full:

In August of 1940, I was a small boy vacationing with my parents at a resort in Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains. One afternoon, a commotion arose at the gift shop across the highway, the reason being that Babe Ruth and some friends had stopped there while passing through the area. My mother quickly obtained a postcard from the gift shop, which The Babe graciously autographed, even addressing it to me personally. For over 7 decades I have fondly recalled the experience, while preserving the autographed card in a scrapbook. And in all that time, it has probably not emerged from this repository on more than a half a dozen occasions, thus accounting for its pristine condition. Recently, however, I thought it was time to offer my cherished possession to someone who could give it the attention it deserves, particularly since my kids (and theirs) never really showed the interest in it that I anticipated. Accordingly, it's yours for the taking, and I only hope that it gives you the same sort of enjoyment that I have had for all these years.

The postcard (5.5 x 3.5 inches), as noted in the letter, has been housed in a scrapbook. As such it displays two small areas of light adhesive residue on the reverse; one along the top border and the other in the lower right corner. There is also a small, diagonal crease in the lower right corner as well. In Excellent condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,500+. SOLD FOR $2,963
