1947 Multi-Signed Ball with Six Hall of Famers Including Ott and Greenberg
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $830
Red-stitched baseball (appears to be an official National League [Frick] ball), dating from 1947, signed by fourteen players, including six Hall of Famers. Featured on the ball, in both blue and black fountain pen, are the signatures of Mel Ott, Frankie Frisch, Travis Jackson, Ralph Kiner (sweet spot), Hank Greenberg, Johnny Mize, Tommy Holmes, Dick Bartell, Elbie Fletcher, Mickey Witek, Goody Rosen, Babe Young, Walker Cooper, and Culley Rickard. The blue-ink notation reading "Polo Grounds/June __ (date illegible)/1947" appears on a side panel. Signatures range from "6" to "10," averaging "8." Because this ball includes not only retired players at the time, but active players from at least three different clubs (Giants, Pirates, Cardinals), it seems reasonable to assume that it was signed over a period of time. However, we do note that the majority of the active players were members of either New York or Pittsburgh, which means that most of the signatures were probably obtained during the three-game series between the two clubs that took place between June 9th and 11th. Regardless of the exact date of its signing, it remains an extremely desirable multi-signed ball from the era featuring a number of prominent Hall of Famers, including Mel Ott, who was in his final full season as manager of the Giants. The ball displays moderate soiling and is otherwise in Excellent condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $830
