1937 Boston Red Sox and Boston Braves Team-Signed Autograph Books with Five Hall of Famers
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $593
Two vintage autograph albums, featuring, respectively, the signatures of members of the 1937 Boston Red Sox and the 1937 Boston Braves. These albums originate from the personal collection of C. Roger Barry, longtime sportswriter with the Patriot Ledger in Quincy, Massachusetts. Barry, who passed away in 2012 at the age of 92, was a lifelong sports fan and, collector. We don't know when Barry acquired these books, but each album bears the name "Miss Margaret Ferris" in blue ink on the first page. The Red Sox album is the highlight of the group, not just because it includes more Hall of Fame players, but because with just one exception, all of the player signatures are presented individually on separate pages. The Red Sox players represented here are Lefty Grove, Herb Pennock (coach), Bobby Doerr (with Mel Almada on the opposite side of the page), Oscar Melillo, Tom Daly (coach), Doc Cramer, Eric McNair, Johnny Marcum, Bing Miller, Fabian Gaffke, Dom Dallessandro, and Wes Ferrell. The signatures of Jimmie Foxx, Joe Cronin, and Pinky Higgins have been deemed "clubhouse" examples by JSA. The sixteen Boston Braves signatures appear together on two pages. The first page features the signatures of Deb Garms, Jim Turner, Guy Bush, Tommy Thevenow, Roy Johnson, John Lanning, Dan MacFayden, and Louis Fette. The second page has been signed by Wally Berger, Eddie Mayo, Bobby Reis, Vince DiMaggio, Al Lopez, Chick Cuccinello, Rabbit Warstler, and Bill McKechnie (Mgr.). All of the signatures in both books have been scripted in blue fountain pen and grade either "9" or "10." Each of the nearly identical albums (the Red Sox album has a red cover, the Braves album has a green cover) measures 6.25 x 4.5 inches, with the red album displaying a large crease on the cover. Otherwise, both are in Excellent to Mint condition, with all of the pages clean and bright. Total: 2 albums. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $593
