Circa 1940 Babe Ruth Single-Signed Baseball

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $6,518

Official American League (Harridge) ball signed by Babe Ruth on a side panel. Ruth has prefaced his black fountain-pen signature (grading "5") with the salutation "Sincerely." The ball displays moderate, uneven toning, as well as a few small areas of dark discoloration. In Good to Very Good condition. Fortunately, the signature panel remains largely unaffected by any of the flaws and the ball displays at a higher level than its technically accurate grade suggests. A Babe Ruth single-signed ball is one of the cornerstones of any baseball autograph or New York Yankees collection, and this ball is a fine representative example that is ideal for display. In addition, it is a very unusual Ruth single-signed ball in that it is signed on a side panel, and also very unusual that Ruth signed this ball with a salutation ("Sincerely") but without a personalization (Ruth signed many balls on side panels with the salutation "Sincerely," but these single-signed balls are almost always inscribed to a particular individual. Both qualities contribute to this being an unusual and particularly interesting Ruth single-signed ball. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $6,518
