1939 Centennial Stamps Block of Four - Each Signed by Babe Ruth!
Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $8,295
Extremely rare uncut block of four 1939 Centennial of Baseball three-cent stamps, each signed in black fountain pen by Babe Ruth. It should be noted that all four Ruth signatures have been boldly scripted and grade "10," but the contrast against the purple background is less than ideal. Ruth signed a myriad of items during his lifetime, but these 1939 Centennial of Baseball stamps remain among the most unusual and rarest. We have only seen one other such block of four Centennial stamps signed by Ruth and we can't imagine that many others exist. The only example we have ever offered, which was just a single stamp, appeared in REA's May 2007 auction, where it realized a final sales price of $2,115. While this is a remarkable Ruth signed piece as is, it is also ideally suited for "break up." As such, it has great appeal to both advanced Ruth collectors and investors. The sheet (4 x 2 inches, which includes the white margin on the left) remains in Near Mint condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $2,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $8,295
