1931 John McGraw Signed Check with 1911 T3 Turkey Red Card

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $2,666

Exceedingly rare bank check signed by Hall of Fame player and manager John McGraw. The check, dated October 14, 1931, and drawn on the Bank of Manhattan Trust Company, is made out to "Cash" in the amount of $392.50. It has been signed "J. J. McGraw" in black fountain pen, with the signature grading "8." This is one of only two McGraw checks we have ever seen at auction, and there is a reason for their great rarity: After McGraw passed away in 1934 many collectors wrote to his wife requesting autographs of her husband. The only examples she had in any abundance were his canceled checks. However, instead of sending the whole check, she sent signature cuts that she clipped from the checks. As a result of that practice, very few complete checks are known today. The check (6.25 x 2.75 inches) displays creases and remnants of tape staining along the top and left borders from at one time being taped into an album. In addition, the check has been affixed to a check-sized thin piece of cardboard (presumably for reinforcement) to allow for easy handling. The check could most likely be professionally removed from this backing if desired. Accompanying the check, and perfect for display together with it, is a T3 Turkey Red of McGraw (Vg, with corner and edge wear, a diagonal crease in the upper right corner, and light spotting on the front). LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $2,666
