Extraordinary Babe Ruth Single-Signed Ball with Provenance!
Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $11,850
Rawlings "Official League" ball signed by Babe Ruth across the sweet spot. Ruth's signature has been beautifully scripted in blue fountain pen and grades "9." This ball has a unique provenance and is accompanied by a one-page typed-signed letter from the original owner, Donald Paris, detailing its history. In full: "To Whom It May Concern: The Babe Ruth signed baseball in question was a gift to me from my father, George C. Paris. In his role as a fundraiser for the Polish Orphanage of New Britain, Connecticut, my father asked Babe Ruth to personally sign two-dozen baseballs for the purposes of auction. Mr. Ruth - who was himself an orphan - willingly signed the baseballs of which this is one." Obviously, knowing the balls were meant for auction, Ruth took considerable care when signing them, as evidenced by the bold signature example on the offered example. (In his letter, Donald Paris states in error, probably because Ruth went to St. Mary's Orphanage, that Ruth too was an orphan; of course he was not.) Aside from some minor smudging and fading to the manufacturer's stampings (all remain legible), the ball displays only light handling wear and is in Excellent to Mint condition. This is an outstanding Ruth single-signed ball that would represent an extraordinary addition to even the most advanced collection. This ball has been sold at auction once before: it appeared in a 2002 Ron Oser auction, at which time it realized $9,031. It has been consigned to this auction directly by the original purchaser at that auction! LOA from James Spence/JSA and 2002 "auction" LOA from PSA/DNA (from the original 2002 Ron Oser auction). Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000+. SOLD FOR $11,850
