1937 Lou Gehrig Signed Government Postcard - PSA/DNA MINT 9

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,555

Government postcard, postmarked March 31, 1937, from St. Petersburg, Florida, inscribed "Best Wishes Ray/Lou Gehrig" on the front in black fountain pen. The postcard has been encapsulated by PSA/DNA, with the signature graded "MINT 9." Gehrig was in Florida for spring training at the time this postcard was sent, but he obviously had time to honor a few autograph requests. Lou Gehrig signed government postcards are extremely rare and we cannot remember the last time we have offered a similar example. This signed Gehrig item is remarkable due to its form (government postcard) and the extraordinary strength of the signature, but is all the more desirable because it is postmarked. The postcard (5.5 x 3 inches) is toned and displays shading in the corner areas from having once been mounted in an album by means of photo corners. There is also a small area of surface-paper loss at the base of the card, directly below the signature. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $4,000++. SOLD FOR $3,555
