1928-1936 Single-Signed Government-Postcard Collection with Sixteen Hall of Famers Including Alexander, Bender, Maranville, Sisler, Terry
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,148
Collection of thirty single-signed government postcards, all of which are postmarked between the years 1928 and 1936, featuring the signatures of fourteen Hall of Famers. In addition to the postcards, the collection also includes a signature example of Charles Comiskey on a 1909 receipt and a later-day signature of Joe McCarthy on a 3 x 5-inch card. This extraordinary collection of signed government postcards was personally assembled by a family member of our consignor (to whom they are addressed) during the late 1920s and early 1930s. All have remained in the family's sole possession since that time and are being offered here for the very first time. (Additional signed government postcards from this amazing single-owner collection are being offered elsewhere in this auction in seven different lots.) Nearly all of the postcards display adhesive residue and/or minor paper loss on the reverse as the result of having once been mounted, and then removed, from an album. Aside from that, the cards range in grade from Good to Excellent condition, averaging Very Good. The signatures have been executed in fountain pen, with the exception of Marquard (pencil), and range from "8" to "10," averaging "9." All of the postcards display the player's team affiliation at the time, with a few also including additional notations pertaining to his career achievements (written in the hand of the original owner). Hall of Fame Single-Signed Government Postcards (14, plus Comiskey and McCarthy on other items): Alexander (a few minor tears, one touching upon his signature, plus minor staining), Bender, Bottomley, Carey, Dean, Feller, Goslin, Lopez, Maranville, Marquard, Pennock, Schalk, Sisler, and Terry (moderate area of paper loss along the top border). The Charles Comiskey signature, executed in pencil, appears on a small receipt (3.75 x 3 inches), dated 2/17/09, issued by the Chicago Automobile Club. The Joe McCarthy signature is scripted in black ink on an unlined 3 x 5-inch card. Non Hall of Fame Single-Signed Government Postcards (16): Earl Clark, Adam Comorosky, Jack Coombs, Hughie Critz, Virgil Davis, Jimmie Dykes, Lew Fonseca, Joe Hauser, Ray Kremer, Pepper Martin, Roger Peckinpaugh, Jess Petty, Everett Scott, Art Shires, and Lon Warneke. The final card has been signed by both Horace Lisenbee and Frank Bushey. Total: 30 government postcards, plus Comiskey signed receipt and McCarthy signed 3 x 5-inch card. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $3,000++. SOLD FOR $4,148
