1936 Babe Ruth Signed Personal Check
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,444
Babe Ruth personal check, dated January 8, 1936, and drawn on the Chemical Bank & Trust Company of New York, made out to "Helen Rowland" in the amount of $600. Flawlessly signed "G. H. Ruth" in blue fountain pen (grading "10") along the base. The check is endorsed by Rowland on the reverse. The Helen Rowland to whom this check is made out to is probably the famous humorist and New York newspaper columnist; however, it should be noted that there was a singer/actress by that same name who enjoyed a short career during the 1930s as well. Babe Ruth personal checks have long been a favorite of autograph collectors due to their inherent authenticity and the fact that Ruth’s signature is always well executed. Many years ago several hundred Ruth checks originating from the family appeared on the market all at once. These have long since been absorbed and now Ruth checks are increasingly difficult to find. The check (8.5 x 3.25 inches) displays normal bank cancellation stamps and holes (two stamps touch upon the Ruth signature), a moderate vertical fold, and three staple holes. In Excellent condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $4,444
