1929 Honus Wagner Signed Government Postcard - Single-Owner Provenance

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,659

Government postcard, postmarked January 22, 1929, signed in black fountain pen by Hall of Fame shortstop Honus Wagner. The legendary "Flying Dutchman" has flawlessly inscribed the card "To Nathan Mindel/with very best wishes/J. Honus Wagner/Jan 21-29," with both the text and signature grading "10." The vintage, handwritten notation "National League/Batting Champion/1900, 1903, 1904, 1906, 1907/1908, 1909, 1911" is neatly printed in black fountain pen above Wagner's inscription. A small, cut magazine photo of Wagner has been affixed to the card in the upper right corner. This is one in a large collection of signed government postcards offered in this auction (presented in eight separate lots), all of which were originally obtained by a family member of our consignor during the late 1920s and early 1930s. All have remained in the family's sole possession since that time and are being offered here for the very first time. The postcard (5.5 x 3.25 inches), which is toned, has a small, semicircular tear in the upper left corner (no paper loss), a small stain, and a few tiny creases, none of which affect the magnificent inscription or signature. The address side displays both adhesive residue and surface paper loss from the card having once been mounted, and then removed, from an album. In Very Good condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,659
