1929 Tris Speaker Signed Government Postcard - Single-Owner Provenance
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $711
Government postcard, postmarked August 17, 1929, signed in black fountain pen (grading "10") by Hall of Fame outfielder Tris Speaker. The vintage, handwritten notation "American League/Batting Champion/1916" is neatly printed in black fountain pen above Speaker's signature. A small, cut magazine photo of Speaker has been affixed to the card in the upper left corner. This is one in a large collection of signed government postcards offered in this auction (presented in eight separate lots), all of which were originally obtained by a family member of our consignor during the late 1920s and early 1930s. All have remained in the family's sole possession since that time and are being offered here for the very first time. Interestingly, this card was postmarked from Newark, New Jersey. Speaker was still playing professionally at the time, as player/manager of the Newark Bears in the International League. Speaker appeared in forty-eight games with the Bears in 1929, batting .355 with 5 home runs and 20 RBI. The postcard (5.5 x 3.25 inches), which is toned, has a few light creases. The address side displays both adhesive residue and surface paper loss from the card having once been mounted, and then removed, from an album. In Very Good condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $711
