1924 Joe Dugan All America Board of Baseball Certificate Signed by George Herman Ruth

Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $9,480

There are few, if any, more impressive Ruth-signed items than a full signature (George Herman Ruth) All America Board of Baseball Award Certificate. Offered here is an outstanding example presented to New York Yankees third baseman "Jumpin Joe" Dugan in 1924. During the 1920s, promotional whiz Christy Walsh, who was also Babe Ruth's agent, came up with the idea of creating the All America Board of Baseball, and he appointed Babe Ruth as its chairman. The idea was for the board to formally recognize and honor the greatest players of the game at each position each year. The board took great pride in selecting an All America Baseball Team from the ranks of the Major Leagues. The selection of the All America Baseball Team was made by Ruth and a panel of ten sportswriters (one sportswriter from each Major League city), with recipients receiving an extremely impressive certificate signed by Ruth and the panel of sportswriters. Each player also received a colorful red, white, and blue sweater.

The offered certificate, printed in grand calligraphic style, is dated September 8, 1924, and has been flawlessly signed in blue fountain pen (grading "10") by "George Herman Ruth," the ten respective sportswriters on the board, and Christy Walsh. The original seal and ribbon remain intact and perfectly affixed in the lower left (these seals and ribbons are often damaged or missing). The certificate (12.5 x 16.5 inches) displays minor staining in the lower left corner, and a few dark surface blemishes near the top border. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall, and, it must be noted, in far better condition than is usually found for these certificates (many examples we have seen display heavy staining).

Because of their extraordinary display value, the prestige of this award to players, and the rare full-name signature of Ruth they often feature, All America Board of Baseball certificates have always been extremely popular with collectors. The fact that this certificate was issued to Joe Dugan, who was a teammate and good friend of Babe Ruth's, makes it especially appealing. This is an extremely attractive Ruth signed display piece, dating from the heart of his active playing career, that would be a highlight in many different types of collections. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 18.5 x 22.5 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000+. SOLD FOR $9,480
