1974 Fleer "Baseball Firsts" Original Production-Stat "Artwork" Collection (42)

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $474

Presented are the actual camera-ready production materials used by Fleer to produce the complete 42-card set of 1974 Fleer "Baseball Firsts." The entire set is presented here in its original production stat form. Without the use of these very stats as camera-ready production artworks, the set could not have been produced! These stats, which are high-quality, black-and-white copies of the original Robert Laughlin art, were used by the art department to create finished cards. Each stat measures 2-3/8 x 3-7/8 and is arranged in three rows of seven and mounted on two thick artist's boards measuring 21 x 15.5 inches each. Production-related notations are visible in the left and bottom margins. Accompanying each board is a thin paper overlay which was placed over the black-and-white stats and used by artists to finalize colors and make notes concerning proper shading, color balance, and set themes, such as the way in which the set title appeared on each card (artists noted that two blue and red titles should alternate on each card in the offered set). Fleer artists colored in some areas of the overlays to create the appearance of a final production card. In the early 1970s, Fleer issued several small sets illustrated by sports artist Robert Laughlin capturing various aspects of baseball history, including World Series highlights, famous feats, and unusual plays and occurrences. The offered set represented here, "Baseball Firsts," chronicles forty-two notable moments in the history of baseball, ranging from the first time a player slid into a base to the breaking of the color barrier to the first .400 hitter. This is an outstanding and extraordinarily unique collection of material which offers great insight into the production process for cards and would be a worthy addition to any original card-artwork or card-production collection. Overall Near Mint condition (the two overlays have become detached from the boards but remain Near Mint). Total: 42 production stats mounted on two artist's boards with accompanying paper overlays. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $474
