1974 Laughlin "All Star Games" Original Mixed-Media Card "Artwork" Collection (44)

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $474

Presented are forty-four original mockup mixed-media camera-ready artworks for the Laughlin "All Star Games" set issued throughout the 1970s. These are the actual materials used by Fleer in production of the set! Illustrated by sports artist Robert Laughlin, and similar in design to the various Fleer sets featuring his artwork, this set highlights All Star games throughout baseball history. A 40-card base set was released in 1974 with a few new cards issued intermittently until 1980 for matchups played during the decade. Four artworks, each measuring 3.75 x 5 inches, are designed directly onto artist's board measuring approximately 12 x 9.5 inches. Other images are stats created from the original artwork which were pasted onto the boards by Fleer to the create camera-ready art for card production. Accompanying each board is a thin wax-paper overlay, which was placed over the mostly black-and-white artworks and used by artists to finalize colors and make notes concerning proper shading, color balance, and set themes. Production artists colored in some areas of the overlays to create the appearance of a final production card. Production-related notations are visible in the margins, and areas of Wite-Out are visible on some of the artworks, illustrating how fluid the design process was for these sets. Without the use of these very mockups, the set could not have been produced as they were an integral part of the design and production process used by the art department to create finished cards. This is an outstanding and extraordinarily unique collection of material which offers great insight into the production process for cards and would be a worthy addition to any original card-artwork or card-production collection. Overall Near Mint condition (the paper overlays have become detached from their respective boards but remain in Near Mint condition). Total: 44 mixed-media artworks mounted on eleven artist's boards with accompanying paper overlays. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $474
