1972 Fleer "Famous Feats" Original Production-Stat "Artwork" Collection (118) Plus Uncut Sheet

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $948

Extraordinary collection of unique production-related materials from the 1972 Fleer "Famous Feats" set. Fleer issued several small sets illustrated by sports artist Robert Laughlin capturing various aspects of baseball history, including World Series highlights, famous feats, and unusual plays and occurrences. The offered set represented here, "Famous Feats," chronicles forty notable records and achievements throughout the history of baseball to that point. This collection consists of the following: 1) Complete set of forty high-quality black-and-white production stats. These stats are copies of the original Robert Laughlin art and were used by the art department in the production process to create finished cards. Each stat measures 3-3/8 x 4-3/8 inches. They are arranged in five rows of four and are mounted on two thick artist's boards measuring 24 x 15 inches each. Accompanying each board is a thin wax-paper overlay, which was placed over the black-and-white camera-ready stats and were used by the printer to finalize colors and make notes concerning proper shading, color balance, and set themes. Fleer artists colored in the overlays to create the appearance of a final production card. Production-related notations are visible all throughout the overlays. Overall Near Mint condition with a few minor tears to the thin overlays. 2) Complete set of forty black-and-white production stats for the backs of the cards. These stats are the actual camera-ready art used to produce the backs of the cards. Each stat measures 3-7/8 x 2-1/2 inches. They are arranged in rows of three (in some cases rows of two) and are mounted on two thick artist's boards, each measuring 14 x 22 inches. Accompanying each board is a thin wax-paper overlay. Four rows have become detached from one board but remain fully intact otherwise. Overall Near Mint condition. 3) Thirty-eight camera-ready mock-up production stats representing the entire set with the exception of two cards. Missing only stats for cards #13 and 14. These stats are closer to the final version of a finished card and differ from the previous versions in that they feature the card numbers and licensing information at the bottom. Each stat measures approximately 3-1/8 x 5 inches and is mounted to thick artist's board. The stats are arranged on six panels of four stats, three panels of three stats, one panel of two stats, and three individual stats (all having obviously been cut down from a larger display). Overall Near Mint condition. 4) Uncut Proof Sheet: 154-card blank-backed uncut proof sheet, representing final versions of the card fronts. Measuring 36 x 47 inches and arranged in eleven rows of fourteen cards, the sheet features three complete forty-card sets and thirty-four duplicates. Written in the top margin of the sheet is "Customers OK For Color," signifying that this is the very sheet that Fleer approved for the printer before final production runs were initiated. The sheet has been folded in quarters (as a means of easy storage throughout the years) and displays heavy creasing in areas and minor tears in the margins as a result. Excellent display value despite these faults. This is an outstanding and extraordinarily unique collection of material which offers great insight into the production process for cards and would be a worthy addition to any original card-artwork or card-production collection. Total: 118 production stats and one sheet. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $948
