1969 Nabisco Team Flakes Complete Set of 24 on Three Uncut Panels

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,444

Complete set of 1969 Nabisco Team Flakes containing all twenty-four cards on three uncut panels. Issued by Nabisco on the backs of cereal packages, the cards were billed as "mini posters" that could be cut out and exchanged, in complete set form, for large posters measuring two by three feet. Naturally, complete back panels rarely survived, making the offered trio especially desirable among collectors. A total of eleven Hall of Famers are featured within this set, including Roberto Clemente, Hank Aaron, and Willie Mays. Each panel remains in Excellent condition with all cards appearing to be Near Mint or better. Slight surface dimples are presents on a few cards (noticeably Oliva, B. Robinson, and Casanova), and only a few insignificant surface imperfections are visible under extremely close and intense examination, which is particularly remarkable in light of the fact that these panels were actually exposed to the elements of the grocery shelves on the back of Team Flakes cereal boxes. We can only assume that in 1969 the cereal boxes were purchased by a true collector with the express purpose of preserving the cards in their ideal form. The complete dotted borders are fully intact all the way around each of the three panels. Light wrinkling in the black advertising area and wear at the corners is present on all three panels, as is to be expected due to their method of issue, but does not affect any of the cards. The blank reverses are entirely clean with the exception of a single strip of adhesive residue at the top center of each that does not affect any of the individual card reverses. This lot originally appeared as Lot #581 in REA's Fall 2013 auction (realizing $4,740) and has been consigned directly from the buyer at that sale. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a remarkable high-grade complete set of this unusual late 1960s food issue with so many stars in its original uncut form. Total: 3 uncut panels (24 cards). Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $4,444
