1960 Topps Venezuelan Near-Complete Set (178/198)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,778

Extremely rare 1960 Topps Venezuelan near-complete set featuring 178 of 198 cards. The Topps Venezuelan issues are among the most fascinating sets of the 1960s. The first 198 cards of Topps’ 1960 baseball set (#1-198) were reprinted on a darker cardboard stock for sale exclusively in the Venezuelan market. The fronts and backs are identical in design to the regular-issue Topps’ cards (later Venezuelan issues would print the reverse text in Spanish) but have softer colors on front and lighter printing on back. This set is far from Mint condition, ranging from Poor to Vg (averaging Gd). For many sets, that might not sound special, but for this rare issue, it is in fact very respectable, and would not be an easy task to duplicate. It is standard for Venezuelan Topps cards to have light paper loss and scrapbook remnants on the reverse, since these cards were intended to be glued into an album produced for that purpose. The offered set is a rare exception to this rule as virtually every back is free of album residue and intact with no paper loss. Keys: #1 Wynn (Gd), 7 Mays/Rigney (Pr), 28 B. Robinson (Fr), 35 Ford (Pr), 50 Kaline (Fr), and 73 Gibson (Pr). Missing the following twenty cards for completion: #3, 10 Banks, 14, 16, 18 Dodgers, 30, 34 Anderson, 41, 52, 54, 70, 71, 95, 143, 148 Yastrzemski RC, 160 Mantle/Boyer, 164, 174, 180, and 194. Though they receive little attention because they are rarely found in high grade, Topps Venezuelan cards are among the most unusual and rare baseball card sets of the decade, and are virtually never seen in complete or near-complete set form. This is first collection (of any size) of Topps Venezuelan cards from 1960 that we have ever offered. Total: 178 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,778
