1950s and 1960s Topps Baseball Back-of-Card Cartoon Artworks (39)

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $415

Collection of thirty-nine Topps cartoon artworks used in the production of the card backs for several 1950s and 1960s Topps card sets. These are the actual cartoon artworks which appear on the backs of the standard cards, adding a little humor and extra content to the reverses of the cards, as was standard practice for many Topps sets during this era. All the original ink artworks are on thin board stock. This collection consists of the following: 1) 1954 Topps (3 artworks): #183, 247, and 249. Measuring 2.5 x 8.5 inches, each artwork is ink drawn in three panels with blank areas at the bottom of each panel where text would be pasted in during production. The third panel on the artwork for #249 has been clipped out. Excellent or better condition. 2) 1961 Topps (1 artwork): #148 Julian Javier. Originally produced in a three-panel strip, the offered artwork features only the text from the second panel and the complete third panel. Presents as Excellent with standard production remnants on front. 3) 1962 Topps (2 artworks): #175 Frank Howard and 436 Felix Mantilla. Each artwork measures approximately 3.5 x 3 inches and is affixed to a larger artist's board, measuring 6 x 7.75 inches, by means of vintage masking tape. Presents as Excellent. 4) 1962 Topps "Baseball Bucks" (1 artwork): Mixed-media camera-ready artwork for "Baseball Bucks" wax wrapper executed on thin stock, measuring 9-1/8 x 7 inches, with an ink-drawn outline and the pasted figure of a ballplayer in the center. Near Mint condition. 5) 1963 Topps (1 artwork): #226 Julian Javier. Measures 7.75 x 3 inches. Near Mint condition with production notation on left panel. 6) 1964 Topps (6 artworks): Ink-drawn artworks, each measuring 3 x 8.5 inches, for the question and scratch-off answer illustrations on reverse. Six different, including two referencing Hank Aaron and Babe Ruth. Vintage tape marks along the side edges and small numbers written in pencil on front (these do not correspond to the final card numbers, and as such, these artworks have yet to be identified). Near Mint condition. 7) 1966 Topps (20 artworks): #1 Mays, 15, 46, 55, 78, 80, 83, 91, 95, 112, 130, 133, 138, 152, 161, 181, 186, and 188. Two unidentified card-back artworks are also included (one of which is missing the top half). The artworks are all small, ranging in size from 15/16 x 2-3/8 inches to 1-1/4 x 4-5/8 inches and executed on thin stock. All present as Excellent or better (except for one creased) with standard production remnants on the blank reverses and along the edges. 8) Unidentified (5 artworks): Three measure 4.25 x 5.25 inches and are pencil and ink drawings on thin stock. Identified on the reverse as First Base, Third Base, and Center Fielder. Two other artworks form a camera-ready stat, featuring two player artworks on glossy stock mounted together on thin cardboard measuring 4-1/8 x 6-1/2 inches. None of these four artworks has any markings corresponding to any specific set and as such these artworks have yet to be identified. These are fascinating original artworks that are ideal for display with their respective issued cards and would enhance any original artwork or card-production collection. Total: 39 artworks. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $415
