1953 Stahl-Meyer Franks Mickey Mantle

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,659

Presented is a 1953 Stahl-Meyer Mickey Mantle, one of the rarest and most attractive of all Mantle cards. Stahl-Meyers were regionally issued in the New York area, one card per package, with Stahl-Meyer Franks. The set features a selection of stars from all three New York teams. They are usually found with serious condition problems relating to their method of issue, including creases and hot-dog stains. The offered example has been graded FAIR 20 by SGC and, as can easily be seen, presents at a far higher level. This is a beautiful card that has been harshly downgraded due to a few faults common to Stahl-Meyers which naturally impact the technical grade. The central image is bright and clean with creasing relegated to the sides and there are three small stains on Mantle's right shoulder. A purple ink stamp related to packaging (remember, these were actually packed with hot dogs!) is present in the nameplate area. The wax coating is even and undisturbed. This is a very attractive example, which (despite the modest technical grade) is far nicer than usually seen, of one of the keys of all 1950s regional issues, and one of the most highly prized of all Mantle cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,659
