1951 Bowman #253 Mickey Mantle Rookie PSA EX+ 5.5
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $7,110
Graded EX 5.5 by PSA (submitted by REA). Exceptionally attractive example of Mickey Mantle's true rookie card in Excellent+ condition. This is a stunning card in an extremely desirable grade! One of card collecting's greatest classics, Mantle's Bowman rookie card is the key to the 1951 Bowman set, and one of the most popular of all postwar baseball cards. The text on the reverse only hints at his future place in history ("Mickey is the Yankee rookie of whom so much is expected in 1951. Everyone was talking about him in spring training..."). This is a crisp card with bright colors and perfect registration. This extremely striking example displays only light wear at the corners (most noticeable in the upper right) and is centered approximately 70/30 L/R and 25/75 T/B with a slight tilt to the image. The offered example is free of the faint hint of a vertical print line on Mantle's sleeve which is very common with this card. The back is also extremely clean, well centered, and free of any gum stains (which are often a problem with 1951 Bowmans). This is a very appealing and exceptional example of one of Mantle's most desirable and significant cards. SMR value in EX 5 is $3,750 and $5,750 in EX-MT 6. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+.
