1952 Bowman Uncut Proof Sheet Collection (6 Sheets) Including Stan Musial - Ex-George Moll Collection!

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,304

Offered is an extraordinary and unique collection of six 1952 Bowman baseball uncut proof sheets, each with nine different cards, highlighted by Hall of Famer Stan Musial. These remarkable proof sheets have an equally remarkable provenance: They originated many years ago directly from the personal company archives of legendary Bowman executive George Moll. The items in the George Moll Archives were kept by George Moll as his most prized hobby-related possessions, and upon his passing in 1984 were sold and eventually dispersed to the four corners of the collecting world. The archives were kept in special leather-bound books that were assembled by Bowman for George Moll to keep as file copies. In many cases, proof sheets were used to supply the cards for this special purpose, but because the sheets (which normally had thirty-six cards) were too big for the albums, they were cut into panels or small sheets (as was the case here) for the official Bowman archive albums. These are proof sheets with blank backs, and because these are proof sheets, the colors are slightly stronger and bolder than usually seen, and the blank backs have been neatly divided by pencil lines into "card sections," with the card number handwritten in the corner of each card "box." The printing of these sheets predates the printing of production quantities of the 1952 Bowman set, and the lines and card number notations on the backs are part of the internal company proofing process, and possibly even represent the actual assigning of card numbers prior to production. There are also three small check marks neatly written on the backs of three of the cards. These sheets were obviously used by Bowman in the production of the set to ensure that the cards were each properly numbered. The six proof sheets are as follows: 1) Sheet 1 (Series 5): #151, 152, 153, 169, 170, 171, 178, 179, and 180. 2) Sheet 2 (Series 5): #148, 149, 150, 166, 167, 168 Roe, 175, 176, and 177 Woodling. 3) Sheet 3 (Series 6): #190, 191, 192, 193, 194, 195, 196 Musial, 197, and 198. This sheet is cut into three three-card panels which are held together with clear tape on reverse. 4) Sheet 4 (Series 6): #184, 185, 186, 202, 203, 204, 211, 212, and 213. 5) Sheet 5 (Series 6): #187, 188 Dressen, 189, 205, 206, 207, 214, 215, and 216. 6) Sheet 6 (Series 6): #181 Collins, 182, 183, 199, 200, 201, 208, 209, and 210. The fronts of the sheets have a Nr/Mt-Mt appearance (with the corner cards displaying just the slightest hint of minor corner wear). The interior cards have naturally been protected on all four sides by the surrounding cards, and are in MINT condition. The reverse of the sheets, as stated above, have production-related marks. This is an extremely significant and unique proof sheet collection of 1952 Bowman baseball, one of the most popular of all 1950s bubble-gum card sets, and with an impeccable and enormously significant provenance. Dimensions: approximately 6-1/4 x 9-3/8 inches each. Total: 6 sheets. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,304
