1954 Bowman Complete Set Including #66 Ted Williams (225)
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,555
33% Ex-Mt to Nr/Mt, 47% Ex, 10% Vg-Ex (including a few lesser), and 10% with natural factory miscuts that otherwise present as Ex-Mt to Nr/Mt. This is a very attractive medium- to high-grade complete set (including #66 Williams) of one of the most overlooked (and compared to many other sets, most reasonably valued) classic bubble-gum card issues from the golden age of the 1950s. The #66 Ted Williams is the key card to the 1954 Bowman set and one of the legendary key cards among all postwar gum cards. The #66b Piersall is also included. We have selected three cards to be graded by SGC. Keys: #1 Rizzuto (miscut, otherwise Ex+), 6 Fox (Ex), 15 Ashburn (Ex-Mt), 45 Kiner (miscut otherwise Nr/Mt), 50 Kell (Ex+), 57 Wilhelm (Ex-Mt), 58 Reese (miscut, otherwise Nr/Mt), 62 Slaughter (Ex-Mt+), 64 Mathews (Ex-Mt), 65 Mantle (SGC EX+ 70), 66a Williams (SGC VG/EX+ 55), 66b Piersall (Vg+), 84 Doby (miscut, otherwise Ex), 89 Mays (SGC "Authentic" due to factory miscut, otherwise Ex), 90 Campanella (miscut, otherwise Ex-Mt), 95 Roberts (miscut, otherwise Nr/Mt), 101 Larsen (Ex), 110 Schoendienst (Nr/Mt), 132 Feller (Vg), 138 Hodges (Vg-Ex+), 145 Martin (Ex), 161 Berra (Gd+), 164 Wynn (Nr/Mt), 170 Snider (Ex-Mt+), 177 Ford (Ex), and 196 Lemon (Ex+). Consigned from an old-time collection. As noted in the condition composite above, approximately ten percent of the set has slight factory miscuts that affect one or more edges. While these cards still present extremely well and range in grade from Ex to Nr/Mt, they may not meet the size tolerances of SGC or PSA and may only grade "Authentic" if submitted. This is a very crisp, clean, and extremely attractive complete set of this classic and often overlooked Bowman issue. Total: 225 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $3,555
