1956 Topps Complete "Super Master" Set (540) Including All Gray Backs, White Backs, Team-Cards
Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $16,590
The 1956 Topps set has always been one of the most popular sets of the 1950s. Issued in the heart of the decade, the 1956 Topps set includes everyone from Aaron to Williams, all in brilliant, stunning color, and in an exciting horizontal design. Presented is one of the most incredible 1956 Topps sets we have ever had the privilege of offering at auction! In fact, this is the first complete "Super Master" 1956 Topps set we have ever offered, and it may even be the first time one has ever been auctioned. (We have not located an auction record anywhere for a similarly complete set.) This set consists of a total of 545 cards and includes all gray backs, white backs, team-card variations, and checklists, as well as five additional printing variations. This assembly is classified as a "super" set on the PSA Set Registry. This set has been consigned by a pioneer collector who did most of his collecting during the 1960s and 1970s and collected with a very keen focus on condition, eye-appeal, and completeness. His determined efforts to acquire all possible versions of a card, including the many Hall of Famers which had to be purchased in duplicate, culminated in the assembly of this extraordinary "Super Master" set, and is obviously the result of a tremendous amount of time, effort, and patience. Many 1956 Topps cards are particularly challenging to find in high grade, especially due to print lines and centering issues. This is a spectacular set and an extraordinary collecting achievement!
We have selected fifteen cards to be graded by SGC (one card was already graded by PSA). Condition Composite: 1) Complete Set of Gray Backs (340 cards): Condition is 14% Nr/Mt (including a few better), 26% Ex-Mt, 54% Ex, and 6% Vg to Vg-Ex (including a few lesser). Keys: #1 Harridge (Nr/Mt+), 2 Giles (Nr/Mt+), 5 Williams (small spot of ink on extreme top edge, otherwise Ex+), 8 Alston (Ex), 10 Spahn (10/90 L/R, otherwise Nr/Mt), 15 Banks (10/90 L/R, otherwise Ex-Mt), 20 Kaline (NM/MT 88), 21 Collins (Ex-Mt), 30 Robinson (EX 60), 31 Aaron (NM/MT+ 92), 33 Clemente (EX/NM 80), 79 Koufax (EX/NM+ 82), 101 Campanella (Fr), 107 Mathews (Nr/Mt), 109 Slaughter (Fr), 110 Berra (Vg), 113 Rizzuto (Vg), 130 Mays (NM 84), 118 Fox (Vg), 120 Ashburn (Ex), 135 Mantle (no bottom border, otherwise Ex-Mt), 145 Hodges (Fr), 150 Snider (Ex), 164 Killebrew (Vg+), 165 Schoendienst (Ex), 166 Dodgers (PSA NM-MT 8), and 180 Roberts (Ex+). 3) Team-Card Variations (18 cards): Name centered, name left, and dated variations for six team cards (#11, 72, 85, 90, 95, and 100). Condition ranges from Vg-Ex to Ex-Mt (averaging Ex) with one Gd/Vg. 4) Checklists (2 cards): Checklist 1/3 (Ex+) and Checklist 2/4 (Ex+). 5) Printing Variations (5 cards): #5 Williams (Vg-Ex+), 92 (Vg), 184 (Nr/Mt), 187 Wynn (slight trim, otherwise Nr/Mt-Mt), and 240 Ford (Vg+). Each of these five cards has subtle print variations which has resulted in them missing the line above the player or team name on front.
This "Super Master" set was assembled one card at a time by a very dedicated, condition-conscious collector over a period of many years, with a concern for all factors, but with special attention to overall eye-appeal. All cards are bright and crisp with light, honest corner wear or centering the only noticeable flaw on many. The fact that this remarkable set has been assembled at all (there can't be too many sets of this ultimate completeness that have ever been assembled) and is being offered as a single unit, as opposed to breaking it up into a basic set and offering the variations separately, makes this a particularly extraordinary offering. For those who can consider buying a set of this caliber and breadth, this set represents a remarkable and unique opportunity. The equivalent SMR value for just the sixteen graded cards (factoring in the half-graded Koufax and Mays at the lower whole-grade level and not including the 529 ungraded cards!) is $6,040. Total: 545 cards (set of 340, 180 white back variations, eighteen team-card variations, two checklists, and five print-line variations). Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000+. SOLD FOR $16,590
