1948 Bowman Complete Set (48)
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,304
Offered is a complete set of forty-eight cards from the 1948 Bowman series, the first baseball-card set issued by Bowman Gum, highlighted by key rookie cards of many stars and Hall of Famers. Most of the cards in this set appear to be Vg-Ex or Ex (approximately 25% are Vg) but with slightly irregular cuts suggesting the possibility of a slight trim; however, upon closer inspection, it is very clear these cards are not trimmed at all but have been long ago hand-cut from a sheet, a quality that we have seen many times in the past with early Bowmans. In the Philadelphia area, where Bowman was located, quite a few 1948 and 1949 Bowman sheets were somehow distributed (probably given away as favors to local children) and many of these sheets were neatly cut up at that time. Consigned from an old-time collection. (Very interesting note: This same collection also included the four uncut 1949 Bowman sheets with double-printed backs that are presented together as a separate lot elsewhere in this auction.) The grades listed on the key cards are without reference to being sheet-cut. Keys: #1 Elliot RC (Ex), 2 Blackwell (Vg-Ex), 3 Kiner RC (Ex), 4 Mize (Ex+), 5 Feller (Ex), 6 Berra RC (Ex), 7 Reiser SP (Gd), 8 Rizzuto RC (Vg+), 12 Sain RC (Vg-Ex), 14 Reynolds RC (Ex), 17 Slaughter (Ex), 18 Spahn RC (Ex), 19 Henrich (Ex), 29 Page RC (Vg), 30 Lockman SP (Vg), 36 Musial RC (Ex-Mt), 38 Schoendienst (Ex), 40 Marion RC (Ex), 45 Sauer RC (Ex), and 47 Thomson RC (Vg-Ex). An outstanding opportunity to acquire a complete set of this landmark Bowman issue at a fraction of the cost of a problem-free complete set with comparable eye-appeal. Total: 48 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $1,304
