1951 Topps "Blue Backs" Complete Set (52)

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $2,666

Offered is a complete set of fifty-two 1951 Topps "Blue Backs". The 1951 "Blue Backs" set is extremely significant as it was the first major baseball-card set ever issued by Topps, along with the similarly styled "Red Backs" set. Eleven cards range in grade from Ex-Mt to Mint and forty-one cards grade Vg to Ex (averaging Vg-Ex). Fifteen cards are professionally graded (twelve PSA and three SGC). Keys: #1 Yost (Vg), 3 Ashburn (Vg+), 4 Ennis (PSA MINT 9), 6 Schoendienst (PSA NM-MT 8), 7 Gerald Staley (PSA NM-MT 8), 8 Sisler (SGC EX 60), 9 Sain (Vg+), 10 Page (Vg), 11 Groth (PSA MINT 9), 12 Jethroe (PSA NM-MT 8), 14 Munger (SGC VG/EX 50), 16 Dickson (PSA NM 7), 20 Branca (PSA MINT 9), 22 Kuzava (SGC NM/MT 88), 28 Brecheen (PSA NM 7), 30 Slaughter (PSA VG-EX 4), 37 Doerr (PSA NM-MT 8), 39 Lopat (Vg-Ex+), 45 Pierce (Vg-Ex+), 48 Cox (PSA MINT 9), 50 Mize (PSA EX 5), and 52 Chapman (Vg-Ex+). Though the cards in this set are technically in varying grades, across the board the cards certainly have a consistent bright, fresh, clean appearance, and one that is far better than suggested by the technically accurate assigned grades. This is an extremely attractive complete set! The 1951 "Blue Backs" Topps set is among the most significant, yet overlooked, of all early Topps cards, and in our opinion represents an extraordinary value. The SMR value for just thirteen of the graded cards (not including the two cards graded less than EX 5 or the additional thirty-seven ungraded cards!) is $1,292. Total: 52 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,666
