1948-1949 Leaf PSA-Graded Collection Including DiMaggio, Williams, and Robinson (43/49 Plus 3 Short Prints)
Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $15,405
Stunning ultra high-grade collection of forty-six different 1948-1949 Leaf Baseball cards, entirely graded and encapsulated NM 7 by PSA, highlighted by ten Hall of Famers, including Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams, and Jackie Robinson's rookie card, and three of the "Rare Leaf" short-prints. Chicago's Leaf Gum Company produced the first multicolor baseball cards of the post-World War II era in 1948-1949. Forty-nine cards in the set are considered "standard," and the additional "short print" series of forty-nine cards in the set are so rare that "Rare Leafs" has long been a formal card-collecting hobby term. The offered collection represents a near-complete standard set consisting of forty-three of the forty-nine "standard" cards and missing only #3 Ruth, 4 Musial, 32 Spahn, 70 Wagner, 136, and 139 for completion. Three of the "Rare Leafs" (identified by "SP" in the summary below) are included. Leafs are without question one of the toughest postwar sets to complete because of all the rare cards. The unusual and striking design, the exotic colors, the unusual poses, and the many great stars included all combine to make the 1948-1949 Leaf set one of the most enduring and popular of all baseball-card issues. This collection consists of the following: #1 DiMaggio (HOF), 10, 11 Rizzuto (HOF), 13 SP, 14, 17, 22, 26, 27, 28, 29, 31, 33 SP, 38 Kluszewski, 39, 42 Peterson (black cap), 43 SP, 46 Mize (HOF), 47, 49, 50, 53 Vandermeer, 56, 57, 59 Appling (HOF), 61, 65, 72, 73, 76 Williams (HOF), 77, 79 Robinson RC (HOF), 82, 83 Doerr (HOF), 84, 86, 91 Kiner RC (HOF), 95, 97, 106 Boudreau (HOF), 111, 117 Gordon (HOF), 125, 128, 139, and 159. A collection like this does not just happen to come together by chance, especially for Leaf baseball. This ultra high-grade set has been assembled one card at a time with an uncompromising commitment to condition and eye-appeal over many years by an extremely dedicated collector who actively sought consistent Near Mint examples, including major stars, during the entire span of his collecting. This is an extraordinary high-grade collection, just a few cards away from a complete "standard" set, with many significant highlights, including particularly magnificent high-grade examples of key cards such as Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams, and Jackie Robinson. This is a world-class collection of one of postwar-card collecting's greatest classics. The SMR value for the group is $14,020. Total: 46 cards. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000+. SOLD FOR $15,405
